The majority of Norway has NRF, Norwegian Red cows. The Norwegian Red cows are a dual-purpose strain of domestic cattle that’s increased for both milk and meat production.

The strain developed since the 1970s in Norway, as the name suggests.

It is mainly a dairy cattle breed that’s been chosen for a breeding goal that is broad, with emphasis on traits like fertility and health.

Norwegian Red Cattle Characteristics

Norwegian Red cows are moderate to large sized creatures with beautiful coloration. They do not say the uniformity seen in strain that is true, even though they are red-pied or reddish for the large part.

They are white and usually red, or black and white. The cows were initially horned. However, a large part of the Red cows is generally polled.

Typical height of the Norwegian Red cows is about 137 cm at the withers, and approximately 145 cm for the bulls.

The cows on the average weight of about 600 kg. The bulls are a lot bigger compared to cows. And average dwell body fat of the bulls is roughly 1300 kg.

Norwegian Red Cattle Benefits

The Norwegian Red cattle are dual-purpose creatures. They’re used for both meat and milk production. But currently, they are mainly being used for milk production.

The Red cattle are famous for their durability and disease-resistance power. The cows are good milk producers and they produce very good quality milk.

Their milk contain approximately 3.4 per cent protein and approximately 4.2 percent of fat. Typical milk yield is left up to 6000 kg per lactation.

The strain is quite great for beef production. The males on average grow at a rate of 1.4 kg per day.

History

The strain was created through crosses of milk cattle breeds with various Scandinavian breeds, for instance, Norwegian Red-and-White, Red Trondheim and the Red Polled Østland.

Ayrshires, Friesians, Holsteins and Swedish Red-and-Whites, etc., are several other cattle breeds that have been believed to contribute to the gene pool.

The Red cattle became the dominant breed in it’s native place, comprising 98% of their total cattle population. For crossbreeding with Holstein cows in the USA dairy industry seed/embryo of this breed is also often exported to North America.

Today the breed is available in over 20 countries across the world, including Italy, Poland, United Kingdom, and the United States. Currently, it is a Continental European strain that is popular.
