The French Simmental cattle are a French breed of cattle originated from Simmental cows breed from Switzerland. It is a breed that’s raised for milk and beef production.
The Simmental cattle were bought into France from Switzerland at the start of the 20th century. The French Simmental cows are also called Eastern red pied (in French, pie rouge p l’est). The studbook to the breed has been opened in 1930.
Montbeliard’s breeders denied although the authorities tried to cross this strain with Montbeliard during the 1970s.
The strain was crossed with Swiss and Fleckvieh Simmental cattle also termed French Simmental at that moment.
The Simmental cows breed was initially bred in Franche-Comté, however now it’s located at the Auvergne. There are approximately 35,000 cows out there.
French Simmental breed information
French Simmental cattle are medium to large animals.
They are red pied coloured with legs and white head along with the red is a tan that is clear.
They can be either horned or polled, depending upon the breeding background. Generally they have pigment around the eye area, which is good for preventing problems in heavily luminous regions.
Udders of these cows are developed and also remain in good health conditions with problems that were common.
Older cows are about 140 cm tall. And the body height of the bulls is around 150 cm.
The cows weight approximately 700 kg. And average dwell body weight of the mature bulls is around 1100 kg.
French Simmental benefits
Simmental cows are creatures that are dual-purpose. They’re employed in both meat and beef production.
But they are primarily used for milk production in France. The breed can be used for crossing with beef cattle such as Limousin and Charolais cattle.
The French Simmental cattle are animals that are extremely hardy and strong.
They are famous for their longevity, high and long term fertility. They are also known for growth prices adulthood and their grazing capability. They can adapt themselves to the many varied conditions from rural small-holder to ranching operations that are big.
They are relatively docile in nature and are of great behavior, and they are quite easy to handle. However, the cows sometimes may be aggressive when protecting their toenails. The bulls can be aggressive sometimes.
The Simmental cattle are an early maturing strain and they can convert food to fat in a very efficient fashion whatever the type of pasture they’re in.
They are extremely good for meat production with a good ratio between meat and waste items like fat and bone. Their meat is, adding to it’s marketability and providing it tenderness.
The cows increased primarily as a dairy breed in France and are also good for milk production. The cows on average produce about 6,400 liters of milk each year.
Their milk is of superior quality comprising about 4% of fat and 3.3 percentage of carbohydrates. Milk of those French cows can be used for producing cheese.
