The Shamo chicken is also a difficult feathered Asiatic Game breed originating in Japan. Although the breed was created in Japan, it’s ancestors came from Thailand (which was known as Siam) between the 17th and 19th centuries.

Shamo chicken was created mainly for use as a fighting bird. And the breed was imported mainly because of this. There are many unique sorts of Japanese Game chickens, but currently, the Shamos are known.

Breeders appeared to the endurance and strength of the breeds when producing the Shamo breed. The Shamos has been selectively bred for 2 decades and now is extremely different from the initial inventory.

Truly the Shamo chicken is really a breed of this Asil chicken. That has been accepted to Taiwan and Thailand and from there to Japan.

The origin place of Shamo is Pakistan, Sindh. And the secondary source place in India. In different regions of Japan, the Shamo chicken is seen in different variety of shades and sizes.

Different regions favoring fowls of sizes such as boxing. The types are; o-Shamo, Chu-Shamo and Ko Shamo. O-Shamo chickens are larger birds with roosters weighing 5.62 kg and hens 3.4 kg.

Chu-Shamos are moderate birds with roosters weighing 3.63 kg and hens approximately 2.72 kg. Along with the Ko-Shamo chickens are bigger birds using roosters weighing 1.81 kg and hens weighing 1.36 kg.

Shamo Chicken Breed Information

Despite being a popular game chicken, Shamo chicken is also famous for being the 2nd largest strain after the Malay chicken. The Shamos are all large and tall chicken with body carriage.

They have well-muscled thighs, wide and muscular body. They have hard and carefully held feathers that do not protect their bodies.

They have a boned shoulder. They’re taller and less streamlined than the Asil chickens and lack the curves of this Malay chicken. The tails of the Shamo chicken generally follow the line of the back sloping down into the floor and are modest.

They have. Their earlobes are colored that is small and bright. Their wattles are of red color, which is missing or quite a little. They have legs and colored beak. And their eyes are of decoration color. The plumage color differ based on the color variety.

For example; the White collection has standard white plumage, Wheaten variety has regular wheaten plumage, the Black number includes regular black plumage, Dark variety has standard dark plumage, Black Breasted Red variety has regular black-breasted red plumage, Spangled variety has regular spangled plumage, Buff Columbian variety has regular buff Columbian plumage and the Brown Red variety has standard brownish red plumage.

On an average, standard Shamo roosters weight 5 kg and hens approximately 3.18 kg.

Along with the bantam roosters weight approximately 1.25 kg and hens about 1 kg.

The Shamo chicken has similarity to the Asil chicken. They are normally easy to handle and also the hens are pretty calm. But the roosters may be territorial and aggressive towards each other.

Even the hens could be aggressive towards other than chickens. And fights among the baby chicks can also be a issue.

The roosters have to be stored separated from roosters for preventing them from fighting to the death. Although the Shamo chicken likes humans.

And they may be tamed from a young age with proper attention. The hens are layers than many of the Asiatic match breeds.

They lay medium-sized light brown egg whites. Hens are excellent mothers and go. The chicken strain produce fantastic amount of meat. But their meat has been described as hard and is not beneficial by everyone.

They’re foragers and good for range that is free, but can’t succeed in confinement.

Shamo Chicken History

In hopes of avoiding the extinction of Shamo chicken, the Japanese authorities placed the bird under protection in 1941.

The breed is available in the USA. It had been first imported to the United States in 1874. But the majority of the chickens in the Southern countries can be seen in the USA. Even the Chu-Shamo and O-Shamo designations are recognized in the Uk.

The Poultry Standards have only 1 form of Shamo, which has a minimum weight of 3 kg.

The Shamo chicken breed was recognized and admitted into the American Poultry Association’s Standard of Perfection in 1981.

Today the breed is kept as a decorative bird in some countries. And raised as game birds in some countries. The Shamo chicken is listed in the Watch class of the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy’s Conservation Priority List.
