The Tauernsheck goat is a milk goat strain used primarily for milk production. The strain is from Austria and derived from the Austrian Landrace and Pinzgauer goat strains.
Farmers began breeding the Tauernsheck goat from the late 1800s. A herdbook has been around since 1967. The breed was mostly bred at Rauris’ valley, also in the region across the Grossglockner. It is a rare breed now.
The Austrian Government found 20 breeders with approximately 200 creatures in 1994, and since the number of the breed has grown.
The Tauernsheck goat is a medium-large sized animal. It had been bred in black and brown, like the Swiss Oberhasli.
However, the Tauernsheck goat has to have more or two large white spots on the sides area and at least a white line in the face, which shouldn’t break the line.
Both bucks and will not have horns. Their legs must be brown and black.
The typical body weight of the Tauernsheck buck is about 60-80 kg, along with that the does weight about 50-70 kg.
